    [I'm not a teacher]

In my opinion, there is no error in that sentence.

Don't forget that sentences start with a capital letter and end with end punctuation, which in this case woud be period/full stop.

Is it possible that the request is for a word appearing in The Mail a publication, and not something that showed up in your mailbox?

If so, then it needs to capitalized and italicized.

It meant a word appearing in my mailbox.
It just didn't sound right, that's all...
    thanks!

It doesn't sound right to me either. We don't usually talk about words "appearing," in our mail or elsewhere, unless it's grafitti spray painted on a wall overnight. (It sounds like a Harry Potter-type letter - I open it, and then the words appear after the spell confirms I'm the recipient.)
