Default History of English Language applied to classroom

Can anyone explain why understanding the history of English is important and how it helps a teacher in a classroom situation?

What I have noticed as an EFL teacher is that by enlightening my students on the origins and evolution of the English language -even if it's just a quick summary - actually helps them adapt to one of the least phonemic languages in the world. In some cases, students accept the difficulties in the English spelling system by dropping persistent linguistic prejudices.
