Default Woman as she is figured as a muse of darkness

Woman as she is figured as a muse of darkness either to light the way to tribal wholeness or to expose "the exact / and tribal, intimate revenge" has perhaps received its most well-known personification in Seamus Heaney's Punishment. (Quoted from Untrodden Regions of the Mind: Romanticism and Psychoanalysis)

Can any native speaker explain the phrase "Woman as she is figured as a muse of darkness"? Thank you very much for your help.

"Muse of darkness" appears to imply that Heaney's poem uses the image of the executed woman as a symbol of the savage response of society to women who transgress, this response being the dark side of society.

Can I rewrite the original sentence as follows?
Though she is a woman figured as a muse of darkness either to light the way to tribal wholeness or to expose "the exact / and tribal, intimate revenge" has perhaps received its most well-known personification in Seamus Heaney's Punishment. (Quoted from Untrodden Regions of the Mind: Romanticism and Psychoanalysis)
By the way, what is the subject of the main clause?
