    to spike sb's guns is it an usefull idiom and is it used often???

    How do you objectively gauge the usefulness of an idiom? Why not start with whether you like it. If it appeals and you can think of situations in which you could use it, then I'd say that it would be worth knowing. I don't hear this one very often, but it does have a certain charm about it IMO.
