Default on to the next wave

What does it mean by ' on to the next wave' and ' build materials'?

Adjunct professor, Kim, thinks he is on to the next wave in building materilas: used tires. While Kim is expeciallly interested in their use for building houses, he is testing out a number of uses for these discareded tires.

    just a student.
    my guess is:
on the next wave - one step ahead, having a very modern approach, acting now how people will act in the future...
building materials - materials that are used to build, construct, create things...
    just a student.
