Default It is better to be with the dead at peace

It is better to be with the dead at peace than to feel fear that I feel.

What does "with the dead at peace" mean ?

Once a person is dead, the troubles and difficulties of life can no longer affect them, so there is a peace that comes with death to contrast with the ups and downs of living.

    Perhaps a re-wording would help:

It is better to be at peace with the dead than to feel the fear I have today.
