    Default holiday

In English speaking countries, when a holiday falls on a Tuesday, is it ever common for companies or courses not to open on the Monday before? In Brazil its possible, and we say: well be hanging the Monday.

Except from the period between Christmas Day [a public holiday] and New Year's Day [ also a public holiday], when most companies apart from retail outlets are closed, there is no company I know which would close for the intervening day if the holiday was on Tuesday.

As for students who want to have a long weekend and miss class on Monday, returning on Wednesday, we simply say that they took the Monday off, is that right? I mean, there isnt an expression to refer to it, is that right?
