    Smile 'Have been true'?

Hi, teacher. I have a question about 'have been true'. Here is the context.

" In looking at the distant past, we tend to assume that wildlife was generally in plentiful supply; that its depletion really didn’t begin until much more recent times. But this might not have been true; at least not always.
    "

I'm confused why present perfect tense is used here. Is there something the author wants to emphasize? I mean, why not just say 'this might not be true'. I cannot see the difference here.

    Thanks for your help!
