Cool bitter wind - what does bitter mean in this expression?

    Hello,
IŽd like to ask UK native speakers what does "bitter" means in "A bitter wind whistled outside the window....". Does it mean unpleasant or piercing or sharp or strong wind? Thanks for your explanations.

    Marketa.

We also often refer to a "biting wind". This is when it's cold and the wind makes it feel even colder - it's as if the wind is biting into us.
