    Default Enroll or Be enrolled?

Rudolf Hess enrolled in the University of Munich where he studied political science, history, economics, and geopolitics.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

My question is: can we replace 'enrolled' with passive voice 'was enrolled'?

    Which is more proper?

    Thank you in advance.

You can use also passive voice but in that context i woul rather use "Hess enroled in..."

The reason being, he himself did the action of enroling... Thus the active voice.
Passive voice is characterized by someone else than the subject who is not important in the given context doing the action

It is not a question of what is more proper. It is as Jiriko says that "was enrolled' says to the reader that someone enrolled him in the university. He didn't do it himself.
