    Smile Correct grammar -- am/was

I have often heard variations of the following phrase: "I have (verb), since I am eight years old." Is it grammatically correct to use "I am," rather than "I was." It just doesn't sound right.

It's is wrong unless the speaker is 8 and is using 'as' to mean 'because'.
