    England is a country, and the UK is a unitary state.

    In 1707 England and Scotland made a union, and the new state got the name: Great Britain.
    In 1801 Ireland became part of Britain and until 1921 the state was called The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
    Since 1921, when the southern Ireland became independent, the official name of the state has been The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
