    Red face Family or Families. plz help

    I have following phrases, but dont know which phrase is right:

    the different types of family or families

    Please help! and if possible can u please give me the general rule for using "of" phrase?

    Keep the two nouns in parallelism:

    the different types
    [plural noun] of families [plural noun]

    Thank Engee30! But i see the book IELTS GRADUATION, many times they didnt follow the rule you gave. Ex:

    the different types of family
    or the different types of event

    So please explain why they can use like that?

    Of course it's not wrong to say, types of family.
    It's all about the phrase type(s)/kind(s)/sort(s) of something, where there are a few options to chose from, some more preferable to others.

    The difference is that the object of the preposition of in the first phrase is in the singular form family, while in the other in the plural form families.
