    Default can/couldn`t

    Hi,
Could someone please tell me the difference between these sentences:

She can`t be the boy`s mother
She couldn`t be the boy`s mother

Do they mean the same thing? Difference in tone?

    Thank you!

Here, the same meaning, Sushi, with 'couldn't' slightly more indirect, hence either more hesitant or more polite.
