    dug into??

It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to this cause.

In the above sentence, I can grip the meaning. But I want to see this sentence in grammartical order. Could you explain this grammatically? Please help me.

    Re: dug into??

It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to this cause.

the underlined clause refers back to the men and women.

    Another suggestion:

It was built by working men and women who used what little savings they had to donate five, ten, or twenty dollars to this cause.
