British English tends to use -ise whereas American English -ize.

As for the original spelling, it was -iz-. Both -ize and -ise come from the Greek derivational suffix -iz-, which was written as -is- in Old French. The American adopted the Greek spelling, whereas the British adopted the (Old) French spelling.
