    In general, the person who receives the item borrows it and the person who temporarily gives the item away lends it.

    May I borrow your pencil? = Can I use your pencil for a moment.

    Do you remember last week when I lent you that book? Can I have it back if you're done? Someone else wants to borrow it. = I gave you the book, now someone else wants to get it from me.
