Default how do Americans pronounce bottom, gotten, button?

    Hello there,

I'm a new immigrant to the U.S. I have noticed some people from work pronouncing the word Button differently.

They would pronounce Button as buh-Inn. My question is, am I hearing them correctly, do Americans tend to pronounce this word like that ? and if yes, is it right to pronounce Bottom buh-Om and Gotten guh-Inn ? if not, could you please tell me how you would pronounce them.

    Thanks :)

Go to some sites like dictionary.com or answers.com and search for your word. There should be a option called pronounce , click on it.

And yeah there are some pronounciation web-tools like text to speech.
    Hope this helps you.

Unlike BrE, Americans do not emphasize the precise "t" sound in the words you mentioned; in many cases we make the "t" sound more like a soft "d" sound. So "bottom" sounds more like "bahdum." "Gotten" sounds like "gaht-en" (whereas in BrE it sounds more like "goht-tin"). Button in AmE sounds like "buht-in" and "buht-tin" in BrE.

I hope this made some sense!
