You don't mention where you are in high school, so I will assume that you are in an english speaking country. If not, you would be taking it as a second language.

I could give you a thousand examples of improperly written english if I just took a regular newspaper or magazine published in the last year. So, if you aspire to writing properly at some point in your life, you must take some courses in english as it is written today, and properly.

    Why should you take English?
    Because writing doesn't come naturally.

Because you want to be able to communicate with people who speak English.
The first one applies more to native speakers. The second one applies more to ESL learners.

    REASONS:

    Reason 1:

So you know that high school is two words, compound sentences are divided by commas, English is capitalized, and sentences end with periods (or question marks or exclamation points).

    Reason 2:

To get a better job when you graduate.

    Reason 3:

To make you a reader, so you'll better prepared to do things like vote, sign contracts, and raise children.

    Reason 4:

To teach you to think creatively, critically, and abstractly.

    Reason 5:

Because school is a sadistic plot to make your entire life miserable. (But you already knew that one, right?)

    WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT

I'll tell you something: I hated high school, too. And I can just about guarantee that your problem with school is probably not about having to sit in an English class.

Your homework assignment is basically asking you to think for yourself. When you ask other people to think of an answer for you, you're missing the point.

So: you don't have to like the question. You just have to think about it and write what you're thinking. People are giving you some good ideas here. Now it's up to you to pick something interesting to talk about.

Good luck - and let us know what you come up with!

Re: Why should students in high school have to take english

    PS -

I'm assuming you're in an English-speaking country. If you're not, it's so you'll be able to understand what in the world we're doing here.

Which may or may not be a good idea!

If none of these reasons convince you, and more exigently if your teacher has a sense of humour, you can argue that high school students need not take English. But be careful.

Charlie's reply is soooo spot-on. I can't tell you how many students I had in the past who approached me with the complaint, "Why do I have to take English? Don't I talk good enough?" My reply "If you're going to answer your own question, why ask me?" went right over their pointy little heads.

I'll admit that I was something of an anomaly in high school - unlike most of my classmates, I actually enjoyed diagramming sentences and learning grammar and vocabulary. It was sort of like a type of algebra with words that I could understand (because I struggled through every math class!). I was a dismal failure in art class, but I eventually found that I could paint pictures with words, and I have parlayed that ability into a career.

(By the way, I also work as an editor and the number of article submissions I receive from graduates of very prestigious universities that are rife with grammar and spelling errors is a constant source of amazement.)
