A more precise term for the kind of word, phrase or sentence the original poster asked about is 'palindrome', also of Greek origin, I've been told.

Building interesting palindromes is a task frequently encountered in various 'Word Game' magazines all over the world.

Below is an example of an excellent palindromic (that's the adjective) sentence:

'A man, a plan, a canal - Panama!' (punctuation marks excluded, of course, the sentence reads the same forwards and backwards).

    Regards,

    Tee Kay
