    Put petrol in my car/motorbike

    My sweetest and respected teachers.
"Put petrol in my car/motorbike of 1 dollar" correct?

"Put petrol in my car/motorbike of 1 dollar"
If you were using dollars, then you would ask for gasoline.

Put a dollars worth of gas in the tank

But then I am just a BE speaker and yield to my AE brethren.

"Put a dollar's worth of gas in the tank" is right, but a dollar doesn't buy a gallon of gas anymore. Perhaps:
Put a pound's worth of petrol in the tank.
Of course, that is only good in the UK. People would look at you funny if you said that over here.

Re: Put petrol in my car/motorbike

It all depends upon where you're buying your fuel. In the US, they'd understand what you meant by "petrol" but you would automatically identify yourself as a non-native. In the US, we'd say "Put a dollar's worth of gas in my scooter." (I use the motorbike/scooter example because one dollar's worth of gas today would be less than a gallon, and most likely no one would actually pull into a gas station in a car and purchase just one dollar's worth of gas. [Although I'm old enough to remember a time when a dollar's worth of gas gave you about a quarter of a tank....]

One other point...in the US, it is more common to pump your own gas (there are only two states that prohibit self-service gas stations), so it is rare to pull in and ask for "X dollars of gas." You typically pull in and pump it yourself and then either go inside and pay for it, or use your credit card to pay at the pump.

New Jersey and... what's the other state?

My Michigan-based husband thought I was kidding when I said it was illegal to pump the gas when we pulled into the station and he hopped out to pump.

I do remember pulling up and simply saying "Five dollars' worth, please" since it's pretty clear that whatever you're driving is what you want the gas put into.

Oregon is the other. And you're right; it's been so long since I've used full-service I forgot that the typical instruction was simply a brusque "Five dollars, please."
