    Default Past Perfect 2

    Dear teachers,

Same question as is "past perfect 1":

Would you please tell me if there is a difference in meaning between the following sentences? If any one of them is wrong would you please tell me why?

    a) He refused to go until he had seen all the pictures.

    b) He had refused to go until he saw all the pictures.

    c) He refused to go until he saw all the pictures.
= He did not go until he saw all the pictures. (?)

    d) He had not gone until he had seen all the pictures.

    e) He had not gone until he saw all the pictures.

    Best regards,
    Hela

    Dear teachers,

Would you please tell me the difference between:

    a) He refused to go until he had seen all the pictures.
    and
    b) He had refused to go until he saw all the pictures.
    e) He had not gone until he saw all the pictures.

Why are b) & e) incorrect? Is it because the fact of seeing the pictures happened before the "leaving of the house"?

and what about Mr Micawber's example:
"He had refused to go until he saw all the pictures; that is why we had to shoot him."

Is the first verb "had refused" in the past perfect in relation to the 3rd clause which happened after the first event?

Would it be possible then to say :

    d) He had not gone until he had seen all the pictures.
or He had refused to go until he had seen all the pictures.

either alone or with the 3rd clause added ?

    Thanks again.
    Hela
