    This is lot better.

    Suppose you prefer one thing over the others by saying "This one is better."

    Which of the following would be grammatically correct?
    This is lot better.
    This is a lot better.

    Colloquially I hear "This is lot better." quite often.

    You need the "a."


    You may be hearing "this is lots better."

    I can't imagine a native speaker deliberately dropping the article, but it may be that you're hearing "izza" with the "a" slurred into the "is."
