    The newly wedded couple is (or are) also here

    Dear Teachers,

    I know that a plural form of verb shall be used in this sentence:
    ' A couple of people are here today';

    but I don't know which is correct and which is wrong of the following:

    ' The newly wedded couple are also here today.'

    ' The newly wedded couple is also here today.'

    Your key to the answer is anticipated, thank you.

    A couple of people / The couple of people + plural verb.

    Don't be surprised, then, when half the time you will read 'couple' with the use of a singular verb; and 'the committee is' and 'the committee are'.

    Thank you so much, dear David, for your help and for that webpage you introduced, which I read and saved for future reference.
