Question What is meaning of "the East begins at Greece"?

    Dear Teacher,
Recently, I have read this sentence:
But the bronzed nymphs from the West - "the East begins at Greece" - looked as though they could take care of themselves and avoid the fate of Ariadne, deserted by Theseus after rescuing him from the minotaur and his maze.
Then, I don't know meaning of "the East begins at Greece", please explain.
    Thanks.

I've not heard the expression. However, in the ancient world, Greece was the easternmost country of the "Western" world that included Europe. From Greece toward the east began the nations of the Near East and the Far East (Arabia and Asia).

    It's about cultural expectations.
