    Default part of speech

This may seem like a kind of silly question, but what part of speech (technical term) is there for the word 'dead' in the sentence "He is dead."

It's an adjective, here a predicative adjective because it comes after the verb.

In addition, predicate adjectives describe the subject:

    Max is tall.
    Max is big.
    Max is blue.
    Max is nice.
    Max is dead.
