    Default Meaning of nickel

Mike: How do I and Joey know each other? Wow, if I had a nickel for every time somebody has asked me that.

a nickel is the American term for a 5 cent coin. Be paid 5c every time you answer a particular question...and be asked the same question often enough, and you'd be rich! It's hyperbole.

Occasionally this phrase can be used for comic effect as well:

"Wow, you look really pretty today."
"Thanks! Wow, if I had a nickel for every time someone told me that..."
"You'd have five cents," my husband interjected.
