    They are both correct, though the British usually use the first, the Americans preferring the second.

    I would use the first if the day is not yet over and you may eat something more.

    I would use the first to inquire about a closed period of time in the past, when additional eating in the period I think of as "today" will not happen.

    In my mind when you say the first sentence there is something relate to it. Let's say a little child is sick and his mother will ask what have you eaten today. And the second sentence maybe it is better not using today

    So far as I am aware, Britons will use either or both.

    A: I feel so tired, I cannot think what's the matter.
