    Default Comma Placement

I'd appreciate help with comma placement in the following sentences:

    1. Please put the pencils on the counter in the desk or beside the cupboard.
    2. Please put the pencils in the drawer in the desk in the office.

    Thanks very much in advance!

    Dear Catherine:

Commas are used to separate items in a list. Sentence 1 contains a list (of options for the placement of the pencils), while Sentence 2 does not.
    Does this help?

    I hope so,
    Petra
