    Unhappy emitted from or by???

This starlight we’re seeing now is emitted from star clusters millions and billions of years ago.

I'm not quite sure whether I should use "from" or "by" in front of "emitted." Do I need to use the past tense if I use "ago"?
Anyone cares to give a fix? Thanks.

Yes you need the past for 'ago' here, as it specifies a point in past time. The emission happened a long long time ago, so 'was emitted from/by'-- both prepositions are OK, though I think that 'by' is the more apt.

Hmm...so in most case, I should use past tense whenever I use "ago" ?

Smile Re: emitted from or by???

In all cases, use the past tense when you use ago.

In most cases, 'ago' will be used with the simple past tense, Piggy, but of course it can and does occur with other tenses:

'Tomorrow, it will be three years ago exactly that I bought my new house.'
'I haven't seen Harry since about ten years ago, I think.'
'I can't remember two days ago, much less last month!'
If I had met you ten minutes ago, I would have bought you a cup of coffee.'

Thumbs up Re: emitted from or by???

I stand corrected. While ago always refers to the past, it doesn't have to be used with only the past tense.
