    'come off as sounding forced'

    "Offering a compliment just because another person paid you a compliment can come off as sounding forced and not genuine."

    What does it mean of 'come off as sounding forced ?"

    to come off means to give the impression that something is the case.

    come off as sounding forced -- it may sound as if you pay a compliment back because you want to comply with accepted standards of social interactions and not because it comes from your heart.
