Red face Because or Because of

    1. But people tend to take an active role and pay more attention to the related stuff because of something they like.

    2. But people tend to take an active role and pay more attention to the related stuff because they like something.

According to the context, should I use "because of" or "because"? Which's better choice?
    Thanks.

Going with my "gut", I choose the first one. (Additional context might cause me to change my mind.)
