Some would consider British English and American English as two separate languages. The pronunciation, grammar, spelling etc. can be quite different. Try not to worry - there is NO real standard English as such because English has become THE international language and now has so many variants. It all depends on your point of view. I'm British, my accent to an American seems strange - but that doesn't make it wrong ! In time your ear will adjust to the differences and so you will learn new vocabulary, etc.

My teacher tolled me that there is no right or wrong in everyone's accent as long as they pronounce the words in a it correct form and the native speakers of English should not expect the ESL learners to speak in their accent cause it's really hard to because your mouth kind of adjusted to your mother language my advice is don't try to please others by speaking their accent just be yourself in pronouncing English as long as you're pronouncing it right
    god bless you

I doubt very much that they regard you as a "jerk" for having an American accent, unless your responses are inappropriate.

The longer ylou live in a place and speak with the locals, the more your own accent will modify.

Anglika: I doubt very much that they regard you as a "jerk" for having an American accent,

That was my first thought also. I wondered how much your conversation is laced with 'dude' and 'you guys' and multiple "awesome"s - heaven forbid, "give me a high five"s!

Look beyond the accent per se...............

According to your profile, you're from Australia. Is that not your native country? Why do you speak English with an American accent?
