    Consider

    I have a question regarding the meaning of "consider" in the following medical sentence:

    Consider discontinuation if the serum sodium increases 10 to 15 mEq above baseline or at 155 mEq, whichever is reached first.

    With such strict guidelines is it possible for "consider" to mean "think about" or can it be treated as an imperative " Discontinue...

    It is telling the medic to weigh up the advantages against the disadvantages of the situation. To say flatly "Discontinue" does not allow him/her to do this.
