    Just a student.

    "Given the period" and "a given day" have different meanings, I think.

    In #1, "given" means "considering" or "taking into account", as in "Given the period [of time] I had, the outcome was pretty good".

    #2 is a little more difficult for me to explain.

    "In a given day/time" would simply mean "in a day/time in the past (or in the future)".

    It would simply mean "any" (but also could mean "specific").
