Can anyone tell me if the words SPORT CENTRE are the fourth choice below?
ph / th p / t p / th ph / t
If the word sport is a p then what words have the ph sound? Can you give me an example or do you know of a good website of this? I've been trying to find a website about ph, th, etc., but without luck.
I think there may be some confusion here. There are three things that might be called 'ph'. There is the English /f/ phoneme, as in 'phone' etc. There is [ɸ], a sound that doesn't occur in English (it sounds like a noiseless whistle). And there is [ph], which occurs in English but isn't phonemic - that is, no meaning distinction depends on it. "Pin" has it, but "spin" doesn't; don't bother to try to make the distinction (most native speakers aren't aware of it) - try saying those two words while holding a feather in front of your mouth - there's a little puff of air in 'pin' but not in 'spin'.
PS That little 'h' should be superscript - printed a bit like an apostrophe. I'm not sure the forum software can handle that. [SUPERSCRIPT]h[/SUPERSCRIPT] - thought not
