    I prefer cats to dogs.
    Look, for Nouns and Gerunds, we use "To" in between...while for verbs we use "Rather than",
    So: I prefer cats to dogs.
    I prefer feeding cats to walking dogs.
    I prefer to feed cats rather than (to) walk dogs.

    I'm not convinced that preferring something over something else is not standard. There are more than 30 million hits for that on Google. There are more than 60 million with to -- but with 30 million, I think we need to accept that over is accepted!
