Default How to find a certain word for a definition

    Hi dear teachers and friends,

Recently I am feeling this problem more and more. I have a sepecific definition for a word in my mind and I don't know how to find that word or where to look for it.

For example, today I wanted to find a word that means" the extreme superiority and prejudiced like of males." but I couldn't find the word. This problem has really become annoying for me. I really appreciate it if somebody guides me to a solution or something that at least gets me closer to the word I need.

    Thanks.

    I’m not a teacher.

    Hi maral55,

Every beginning is hard.Try for a start your luck with the word “chauvinist”.

    chauvinist (n)
Militant devotion to and glorification of one's country; fanatical patriotism.
Prejudiced belief in the superiority of one's own gender, group, or kind: “the chauvinism . . . of making extraterrestrial life in our own image”

The word chauvinism is often used as shorthand for “male chauvinism,” a term describing the attitudes of men who believe that women are inferior and should not be given equal status with men.

    Regards,

    V.

Hi vil, thanks for the response, but what about the other words? I mean there really isn't any way to make this process easy?

Sexism has the same meaning. Sexist would be a man with a chauvinistic belief in the inferiority of women.

yes, you can also say arrogance. I think the two words you and our other friend mentioned suits this meaning.

Btw, I'd really appreciate it if someone tells me how you find them at the first place. For exmaple you're writting something and you don't really know a word, what should you do?!

    what does 'Btw' mean?

When you are writing or/and talking in English, it's perfectly possible to forget some words, the problem is, most non-natives perform a translation. Being fluent in English, on my view, is not about being as fluent as a native is, but being smart enough to ask for somebody's help. You are fluent when you think in English.

    - Please, what's the name of that thing we use to brush our teeth?
    - Toothbrush.
    - Thank you.

    Simple like that.

If this is your problem, do not hesitate, ask a teacher.

    Hi there,

    BTW
    Function: abbreviation

    by the way

Thanks for your response. So what you mean is that there's just no way other than asking. I just thought maybe there is some sort of dictionary or something else which has classified the words and has given some sort of a key......
