    Default THE+acronym

    Hi,

Is it true that acronyms such as FBI, IBM, etc must be preceded with 'the' whereas acronyms which can be pronounced like a word such as UNESCO do not take 'the' before them?

    Thanks.

No, as far as I know there is no such rule, we don't use an article in front of IBM.

Indeed, many people in the UK wouldn't call it an acronym; you don't pronounce it /ɪbəm/, do you? Do you?

    Hi again,
How would I know which acronyms need 'the' and which don't?

Well, for example IBM is International Business Machines, we wouldn't say the International Business Machines. FBI is The Federal Bureau of Investigations, so we say the FBI.

    Hi,

So, whether 'the' is added or not is depending on an organisation to decide it?

    thanks.
