    sentence meaning

I saw he was standing between the rails on the way by which the train had lately passed.

I.What is the meaning of "on the way" here?
II. "by which" means by the rails ?

    Please.

    Re: sentence meaning

    1. 'way' is another expression for 'route'
    2. by which = along the route the train had gone (before). The writer uses a relative pronoun to explain the 'route' (way).

I.The words in black type means " the rails that is on the route/way" ?

II. Can the "on the way" be omitted without changing the meaning of the sentence?

II."the rails on the way by which" and " the rails on the way on which" mean the same in this case?

IV. "between the rails" and "on the rails" mean the same in this case?

    Please.
