    I visited him in the hospital (American English)
    I visited him in hospital (British English)

    But : He works at the hospital (in both varieties of English)

    I understand now if we are visiting someone who works at a hospital ,we use at.

    And if we are visiting someone who dose not work there (like for instant a patient) we use in .

    You see, AT THE HOSPITAL or IN THE HOSPITAL are both pretty acceptable. The only difference is that 'at the hospital' refers to the entire hospital grounds, whereas 'in the hospital' refers to the actual building itself. They're just different ways of saying the same thing.

    As far as I'm concerned, the 'in (the) hospital' option in the example you provided, is preferable.
    That's my take on it. Hope this helps.

    Additionally, visiting collates with in: to visit someone in(side) a place e.g., hospital, Rome.
