    It is a matter of opinion, if you ask me. It depends on how you interpret the structure of the sentence.

    I bought a pencil and (I bought) a pen. -- compound sentence (two indep. clauses)
    I bought (a pencil and a pen) -- SVO; the bracketed part is the coordinated object of the verb; simple sentence with one clause

    The question is: compound sentence or compound object. Both.
