Description:
The new quotatives, like and go, have assumed quite a number of functions outside the quotative frame. So far, all models proposed to explain their polyfunctionality rely on the postulate of unidirectionality in grammaticalization. Based on the findings of Lakoff (1987), this article proposes an alternative model for like and shows the importance of a radial functional network for the interpretation of like and go's synchronic uses.
