HISTORY OF GRAMMAR STUDY
Whenever I am introduced to someone who then learns that I am an English teacher, the person frequently comments that English was his worst subject when he was in school. If my new acquaintance then learns that I spend most of my time teaching grammar, he usually remarks that he had better watch the way he talks, as if I were a “grammar cop” waiting to issue a summons to illiteracy court at the mention of a split infinitive or the drop of a dangling modifier.
