"Past" is the name of the Tense, "Simple" is the name of the form as distinguished from "Continuous" which is another form of the Past Tense. There are two forms in English -- "Simple" and "Continuous" -- and each Tense -- Past Perfect. Past, Present Perfect, Present and Future can take either form.
