Physics is the science of matter and energy and the interaction between the two. Therefore, it can not study itself. Only a physicist it the proper word to use, because a physicist is a person who studies physics.

I just want to correct what I've written earlier about this because I had a typographical error with the spelling of the word "while". I would like to state my opinion again: Physics is the study of laws of matter, gravity and atoms while physicist are the scientist who studies Physics.
