Changing Wh-questions with do, does, or did into indirect questions - a handout

Here are several examples of wh-questions with do, does, and did:

1. What do you do?

2. What time does the store open?

3. What time does the train leave?

4. How many cups of coffee do you drink in a day?

5. Why did she go home?

To change wh-questions with do, does, or did into indirect questions, the do, does, or did is left out (omitted). We then add one of the following expressions, could you tell me, would you mind telling me, in front of the wh-question word.

Here are the above questions changed into indirect questions.

1. Can you tell me what you do?

2. Could you tell me what time the store opens?

3. Would you mind telling me what time the train leaves?

4. Can you tell me how many cups of coffee you drink in a day?

5. Do you know why she went home? (Regarding question 5, as the question refers to the past tense, go changes to went. The past tense of go is went.)
