A Primer for teaching English to speakers of other languages

When Richard Flynn of Using English approached me to write lesson plans for the site, the idea of putting together a primer sprung to mind.

Target: Young Learners


Greetings and Warm-up: Greet the class with a good-morning or good-afternoon depending on the day. Have the class stand up and respond to your greeting and do the warm-up. Ask the students, "Do you want to sing a song?�? Usually, they'll nod and begin to twitch and move their bodies. Some will respond with a yes. Songs I teach young learners include the "Eensy Weensy Spider�?, "Head & Shoulders, Knees & Toes�?, "The Alphabet Song�?, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star�?, "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush,�? "Ring Around The Rosey�?, and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat�?.

What are interrogative pronouns? An interrogative pronoun is used to ask questions. Wh-questions are used to ask for information about an event or a situation. A wh-question consists of an interrogative pronoun i.e. who, what, where, when, why followed by a verb and a noun complement. Word order is subject-verb-object. For example, "What's the date?�? "Where are you?�? "Who is he?�?, "When is it?�? "What's the time?�?

Target group: Young learners

Greetings: Good-morning everyone. How are you? Have the class stand up to do the greeting.

Warm-up: Ask the students, "Do you want to sing a song?" Usually, they'll nod a yes, and some students will jump up and down. Sing a song. If your students don't know a song, spend a few minutes teaching them an easy song such as 'Row, row, row your boat' or do a chant like the 'Teddy bear Teddy bear turn around'.
