Is the word "story" not interchangeable with "floor" in this case?

Hello,
I read a sentence in a piece of news.
"Most of the elevators automatically halted at the nearest floor and opened their doors, but 14 were stranded between stories."
I wonder if I can also say this:
Most of the elevators automatically halted at the nearest story and opened their doors, but 14 were stranded between floors.
I have such doubt because I somehow feel "between floors" sounds not grammatically appropriate.
Do I think too much?

I would use floors in both cases.

A floor is a fixed level/point along the route of an elevator or lift.
A storey is the entire space on a particular floor.
So it is more specific to refer to the floor rather than the storey at which the lift stops.

I don't think I have ever taken an elevator to a "story."

I might talk about a 20-story building, but I would take the elevator to the 20th floor.
