Further context is needed. Hospitals and nursing homes are "institutions." And they are not solely for the destitute or mentally ill.

Prisons and mental hospitals are also "institutions."

Universities are institutes too.
But Oxford online dictionary here shows some meanings. Focus on first one.

Not a teacher.

Thanks, and here it is:
And lastly, be gentle.
You will live longer than you think you will. You will likely die in pain. Most will die in an institution. It seems like a long time from now, but think about when you left high school/college. How long ago was that? Time is moving faster the older you get. Remember your physics class. Yes it comes back. Everything comes back. Postmodernist physics. Time is relative. Well it is not longer in the classroom. It is in real life. The older you get the faster time goes by. You are still growing and developing. Your brain right now is mush. But think about this: you will never be younger than now, and your family and friends will never be younger than now. Love them. Whatever you feel, let it out. You have a short lease on life. Use it well. Be gentle on yourself. You are not perfect. Neither is everyone else. Don't hurt yourself, no drugs, protect yourself from head trauma, sleep as much as you can, enjoy the company of people, have intimate and loving sex with people you care for, eat quality not quantity, earn your food, put yourself in new situations everyday, do not do repetitive things, find an exercise you enjoy and do it as often as you can, be active, use your body and most important of all, be gentle with yourself. You will fail and fuck up. Move on.

Here, 'institution' means a nursing home, or hospital, or old people's home, etc. The point is, you won't be in your own home, surrounded by your loved-ones.

The piece said "institutions", not "institutes".

[strike]But[/strike] The Oxford online dictionary here shows some meanings. Focus on the first one.

Not a teacher.

See above. Try to be as accurate as possible when trying to help other learners.

Why would people die in educational institutes?

Mike, please do not focus on the horrible verb die. We can find many examples which show the relation between the words. I am familiar with technology and not with medical terms. For example Wikipedia definition

I am focused on the word "die" because it was the title and main intention of the thread.

If it hadn't been for the word "die" in the original post, we probably would not have been discussing the different types of institution and trying to guess what kind of institution was being referred to.

"Die" is not a "horrible verb". It is a verb.

You can add hospice to the list of institutions where people die.

You can add hospice to the list of institutions where people die.

In fact, a hospice is the one place where the expectation is that you will die once you are in there. People don't go to hospital to die, or to prison or to university, but the idea of a hospice is that it provides end-of-life care. You spend your final days/weeks/months there (if you want to).
